It gives a sledder a opportunity to see how fast their sled really goes.
You are probably saying to yourself " my snowmobile has a speedometer", and you're right. But it may not be accurate and the spinning track may give a false reading of your speed. So you can bring your sled to a radar run, to really check your speed. And you can check your speed against other sleds in your class!!!
So here is how it works. When you show up to run your sled, you have to register in the tent. There you will sign a waiver, be put in a class by the number of CC's and the stroke ( 2 or 4) and pay a small fee to run your sled against the radar, usually $3.00. A small amount for so much fun. You can run your sled as many time as you want, each time for $3.00.
WHY MORE THAN ONCE. Well you see, after you run against the radar gun, another sled in your class may run a faster speed. The macho man or woman you are, wants to try to top that speed. And it goes on and on till someone gives up. Some keep trying even though there is no one in their class , just to see if they can top their own speed. And it really get interesting when a small CC sled goes faster than a bigger CC sled.
After each run, the speed is posted and you can keep your speed card for a souvenir or leave it posted so everyone can see. The length of the run is about 1000 feet and speeds run from 40 to 80 mph or more .
You always run the radar by yourself, never another sled along side or racing against you. Wear a tether switch, or know where your safety stop switch is located and how to use it. Make sure your sled is in good working order, especially the drive belt, brakes , track and idler wheels. And it shouldn't have to be said, but wear a helmet , face shield and gloves.
So you say " I don't have a fast sled". You don't have to be fast, just have fun. They must be purchased from the M.S.A. office at 1-800-246-0260. They cost $60.00 and include Friday night hors d'oeurvres . Sat breakfast buffet , Sat dinner buffet/entertainment and Sun breakfast buffet, and door prizes
Friday from 7-10pm is the get- acquainted party, with a cash bar. On Fri. night participants sign up for guided rides through out the Eastern U.P. There are about 10 -15 different guided rides and you pick one that best matches your riding style. There will be 15 - 20 people in each guided ride. Each "Guide" will introduce themselves on Friday night and describe their guided ride. The evening will conclude with time to catch up with old friends , make new ones and meet with other MSA members dedicated to the sport.
On Sat morning, breakfast will be served from 7-9 am and the guided rides begin around 9:15am..Out in the parking lot will be your "Guide", on their sleds with a pre-determined colored ribbon you picked up Friday nite. Once the group assembles, the ride will start. Be responsible for the rider in front and back of you during the ride, use hand signals, fill your tank and check the condition of your sled before the ride. As always ZeroTolerance Ride is the rule. Lunch will be on your own, as the "Guide" usually picks a good place to eat!
After a fun days ride, return to the Casino for a Dinner Buffet starting at 6pm. After dinner there is always some type of entertainment, camaraderie with fellow MSA members, door prizes, raffle and a cash bar. After a good ride, food and prizes, it's time for a good nites sleep. Call the MSA office 1-800-246-0260 to get a control number for room discounts.
Sunday morning breakfast buffet will be from 8-10 am. Tradition dictates that someone from each riding group share their fun of Saturday's rides. Who fell off, who stayed on, who got stuck, who broke down, and a recap of the ride.
Then stick around for more riding on your own, or join the Canada ride set for the week. The Sault is a true snowmobiling heaven, with an average of over 115 inches of snow and 100's of miles of connecting trails.
Have a safe ride home and return next year for more fun.
CLICK HERE TO GO TO M.S.A.
.

Thinking about Snowmobile Safety

UP HILL

When going up a hill, give the sled in front of you plenty of room. It may be good to add a little speed at the bottom of the hill, to give you momentum to get over the hill. But a novice rider may not have the skill or desire to add speed. So always know the skill of the rider in front of you and give them plenty of room for all type of riding conditions.
If you wait till the sled in front gets over the hill, you will avoid being hit by a sliding sled going backward down a hill, if traction or momentum is lost .
I don't think there is a good way to go backward on a sled down hill. Sliding backward down a hill may cause the sled to flip or turn over. If you can stop the sled before it goes down backward, dismount and stay on the high side of the hill . Try to turn the skis so the sled will move at right angle to the hill .You may get it turned around so it can be ridden down forward.
If you can't stop before it goes down backward, try to keep the skis straight as possible. If you have to turn your skis to avoid a hazard, try small movements. Full lock, turned skis may cause the sled to flip. Brakes or small amounts of throttle may slow you down, but there is no good way of going backward down a hill.
,
When reaching the top of the hill, back off the throttle a bit, always be on the lookout for oncoming sleds and stay on your side of the trail. Some people feel standing up and looking over their hood, may give them a better line of site going up hill. This practice may not be a good idea. Know your skill level and sleds capabilities.
Studs and traction product may help going up or down a hill. This is something you might consider if there are lots of hills and problems climbing them.
CLICK HERE FOR MORE ON SAFETY

SNOWMOBILE SAFETY,taking a curve

While we are waiting to go snowmobiling, we got time to think about how we might have a safer riding season.
Curves are one of the most dangerous places on the trail. When entering a curve, slow down and cut across the curve through the woods, WITH YOUR EYES. Look far ahead through the curve at the exit, looking for the curve to become a straight away..
Looking for the exit of the curve may be difficult because of trees, hills and how sharp the curve is. But don't fix your eyes on the entrance or the center of the curve. Keep your eyes moving. As your sled moves, the exit of the curve moves ahead too, until it becomes a straight line. Keep looking ahead in the curve at the farthest point..
Slowing before the curve also gives you more time to look and sets your sled up to make the curve at a safer speed.
